Effective October 1, 2003, CNS-Telecommunications is now making lower cost long distance services available to faculty and staff campus telephone numbers using the prefixes of 392, 846, 294, 273. The service is provided via BellSouth Long Distance Services (BSLD) and is for calls within the state of Florida and the US.

    BSLD cost

BellSouth Long Distance is billed per minute as follows:

    Dedicated intrastate (within Florida)$0.055/minute
Dedicated interstate (outside of Florida, but within US)$0.035/minute
Switched (calls originating outside UF campus)$0.08/minute

    BSLD dialing

To place a long distance call using BellSouth Long Distance Services, just dial 9:

    • In-State: Dial 9+1+Area Code + 7 digit number
    • Out-of-State: Dial 9+1+ 10-digit number (area code + 7-digit phone number)

This service is available for on-campus faculty and staff numbers that start with the prefix of 392, 846, 294 or 273. Should the trunks to BSLD become full, the call will rollover to SUNCOM trunks and will be billed at the SUNCOM rate. CNS-Telecom will monitor the traffic usage of the BSLD trunks to ensure that the most efficient cost benefit will be returned to the University.

    SUNCOM Dialing

SUNCOM uses a different 3 digit prefix than that assigned to the local phone system. The 4-digit station number remains the same. For example UF Centrex prefix 392 becomes 622, 846 becomes 623, 294 becomes 626, and 273 becomes 602. If someone wants to call 392-1111 using the SUNCOM number they would dial 622-1111. For SUNCOM directory assistance, dial 8-826-6000.

SUNCOM Network Calls (the person you are calling has SUNCOM):

Dial access code 8 + 7-digit SUNCOM number.

    When not to use SUNCOM:

    1. You should not use SUNCOM to make local calls. Local calls include Alachua, Archer, Brooker, Hawthorne, High Springs, Melrose, Micanopy, Newberry, Bronson, Lake Butler, Trenton and Waldo.
    2. You should not use SUNCOM to call toll free numbers (800, 888, 877, 866, or 855)
    3. You should not use SUNCOM for personal calls.

Your Long Distance and SUNCOM bill and some suggested audit guidelines

Excerpt from Mike McKee, University Controller, Deans, Directors, and Department Heads Memo dated September 23, 2003:

"Each department should establish procedures to ensure that telephone invoices are properly reviewed and approved for payment and that only authorized and official business telephone charges are paid. On invoices related to University issued telephone calling cards, long distance calls to an employee's personal residence should be clearly identified on the invoice as being for official business and the nature of the business should be identified. Personal long distance calls should be made using a personal calling card. SUNCOM calls should receive the same degree of control and review as other long distance toll charges."

Auditing your long distance and SUNCOM bills to note any discrepancies is just one way to control non-authorized usage. Please use the following suggested guidelines as criteria in performing audits aimed at identifying abuse:

    • Multiple calls to the same number - Three calls within the same day to the same number or more than 21 calls a month to the same number.
    • Lengthy calls - Calls greater than 30 minutes.
    • Outside geographic area - Calls made to area codes not normally included in your agency's daily business.
    • Outside normal work hours - Calls made before and after your normal business hours. Lengthy calls made during lunch or break periods are prime candidates for abuse.
    • Specific telephone numbers - Numbers that appear not related to official business.

If you see suspect numbers, check the bill from the previous month, and the next bill received, for a pattern. A suggested follow-up would be to call the suspect number and ask some questions about the relationship with your organization. To assist you in your toll investigation, SUNCOM can identify any 7-digit SUNCOM number that you do not recognize.

If you need to verify a 10-digit terminating number and have access to the internet, you can go to the following internet address, http://www.anywho.com/rl.html, and put in the phone number to see if you can find a listing. If a listing cannot be found, then you will have to call the number as stated above as neither SUNCOM nor Telecommunications have the database to research the numbers called that you are investigating

    Personal Calls

If you have to place an occasional personal long distance call from your office phone, we encourage you to get a personal calling card. This will ensure that your personal call will not be billed to the department.

Personal calling cards should also be used for personal calls to BellSouth's extended calling service area, which includes Cedar Key, Chiefland, Cross City, Ft White, Keystone Heights, McIntosh and Old Town.
