Florida Relay Service (FRS)
Florida Relay is a communications link that allows people who
are Deaf, Deaf-Blind, Hearing or Speech impaired, and have specialized
phone equipment, to communicate with people using standard phones.
To call FRS, dial 9 + 711 from your campus phone, or use the
following toll free numbers:
* 1-800-955-8771 (TTY)
* 1-800-955-8770 (VOICE)
* 1-800-955-3771 (ASCII)
* 1-800-955-5334 (STS)
* 1-800-955-8773 (Spanish)
* 1-800-955-8707 (French Cr)
The deaf, deaf-blind, hearing or speech impaired can make
phone contact with anyone by dialing 1-800-955-8771 (TDD) or 1-800-955-8770
(VOICE) from any phone with a Telecommunications Device for the
Deaf (TDD). Calls are answered by a Communications Assistant (CA) at
the FRS center in Miami and relayed to the hearing person you wish to
reach. The hearing person you called speaks to you through the CA. Each
word is then typed to you by the CA. You read the message and type your
response on the TDD. Your TDD response is relayed by the CA who speaks
to the hearing person you called.
Hearing persons can reach the deaf, deaf-blind, hearing or
speech impaired simply by dialing the FRS at 1-800-955-8770 (VOICE).
There is no charge for this service, except on long distance
calls. Service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. THIS
SERVICE SHOULD NOT BE USED IN AN EMERGENCY. INSTEAD CALL 911.
FRS should not be used to handle TDD-to-TDD calls. Direct TDD
calls should be made without FRS assistance.

Amplified Handsets
Amplified handsets can be purchased through
Telecommunications and are easily installed. They simply plug into an
existing phone. Prices vary based on the handset model. Submit a
workorder to Physical Plant Division, Work Management Center at
392-1121 or E-mail at workorder@admin.ufl.edu
to request an estimate and/or purchase of an amplified handset.
Purchased handsets can be picked up at Telecommunications.
The choice of handsets varies depending on the type and model
of phone. A wheel adjustment or toggle on the handset (similar to the
volume control on most phones) controls the volume on the handset.
