Long Distance CallsTo place a long distance call using BellSouth Long Distance Services, just dial 9:
This service is available for on-campus faculty and staff numbers that start with the prefix of 392, 846, 294 or 273. Should the trunks to BSLD become full, the call will rollover to SUNCOM trunks and will be billed at the SUNCOM rate. CNS-Telecom will monitor the traffic usage of the BSLD trunks to ensure that the most efficient cost benefit will be returned to the University. SUNCOM is the state long distance system for calls within the US, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands.
SUNCOM uses a different 3 digit prefix than that assigned to the local phone system. The 4-digit station number remains the same. For example UF Centrex prefix 392 becomes 622, 846 becomes 623, 294 becomes 626, and 273 becomes 602. If someone wants to call 392-1111 using the SUNCOM number they would dial 622-1111. For SUNCOM directory assistance dial 8-826-6000. SUNCOM Network Calls (the person you are calling has SUNCOM):
Off-Network Calls (to a person without a SUNCOM number):
NOTE: If you are dialing a location within the same area, you must still include Area code 352. When not to use SUNCOM:
Personal Calls If you have to place an occasional personal long distance call from your office phone, we encourage you to get a personal calling card. This will ensure that your personal call will not be billed to the department. Personal calling cards should also be used for personal calls to BellSouth's extended calling service area which includes Cedar Key, Chiefland, Cross City, Ft White, Keystone Heights, McIntosh and Old Town because these calls are billed by BellSouth. We currently have five toll free area codes: 800, 888, 877, 866, and 855. UF Calling Card Calls are less expensive than collect calls back to the campus or third number calls billed back to your campus office:

AT&T "Policy on Third Number Billing Calls." AT&T has a policy in place instructing operators to obtain verbal third number acceptance of the charge by the third number if the call is coming from locations with high third number uncollectibles. The University falls into this category. The operator will automatically know if the call requires acceptance of the charge by the third number. If the operator is unable to secure acceptance for your call, you should consider alternate billing such as: collect, personal calling card or personal credit card. The operator does have some flexibility in assisting customers when verbal acceptance cannot be secured at the third number and the call is an EMERGENCY. The following is the practice AT&T uses to handle emergency calls when verbal acceptance cannot be secured at the third number and the call is an emergency:
If you have to place an occasional personal long distance call from your office phone, we encourage you to get a personal calling card. This will ensure that your call will go through without any problems. Personal calling cards should also be used for personal calls to BellSouth's extended calling service area which includes Cedar Key, Chiefland, Cross City, Ft White, Keystone Heights, McIntosh and Old Town because these calls are billed by BellSouth.
