  • WordPerfect for the mainframe is no longer supported.
  • Dial-up to NERIX is available.
  • TCP/IP was installed in MVS.

  • Ron Schoenau, Director, and Bob Smith receive 35-year service pins.
  • 56K modems installed.
  • Internet2 gets connected to UF; OC3 physical link to vBNS is turned on for the first time.
  • UF President, John Lombardi, announces computer requirement for all students.
  • First annual Information Technology Security Awareness (ITSA) Day.

  • The IBM 9672-R45 processor was upgraded to a model R55 (5 CPUs) and the memory was doubled to 4GB.
  • The NERSP interactive processor was replaced with a newer model and eight new silver nodes were installed on the RS/6000 SP computer.
  • DOCWEB replaced DOCSYS.
  • OS/390 operating system upgraded to V2.6.
  • ISDN service available.
  • NERVM POP3 e-mail server removed.
  • GatorLink accounts get web space and account limits were increased to 15M for e-mail storage.
  • A separate OS/390 system environment was created for Y2K testing.
  • NERSP mail servers reject mail relaying.
  • Modem pool upgraded to 56K modems only.
  • First annual Information Technology Day.
