  • Front Office, Accounting, and User Services staffs moved temporarily to Peabody Hall so the SSRB could be renovated.
  • The NERDC Policy Board began approving minicomputers for terminal data centers to support distributed data processing.

  • A second CPU was installed (an IBM 3033 with 16 megabytes of main memory) (December 19) (4.7 MIPS).
  • A second machine room was added on the second floor of the SSRB.
  • A building was constructed to house an Uninterruptable Power Supply.
  • New Interactive Systems were added (MUSIC, economy TSO, ATMSIII).
  • Class 0 was instituted to run large research jobs.
  • Dr. Conklin left CIRCA.

  • A third CPU was installed (an IBM 4341 with 4 and later 8 megabytes of memory and model 3370 disks) (571 megabytes per unit) (January 11) (1.10 MIPS).
  • The 1403 high speed printers were replaced by model 3202s.
  • VM/CMS and VSAPL were installed.
  • Dr. Mark Hale was named Director of CIRCA.

  • The conversion began to replace the 3350 disks with 3380s (2521 MB/unit).
  • The Amdahl was replaced by an IBM 3081 with 32 megabytes of main memory (March 27) (10.0 MIPS).
  • The FOCUS system was made available to users.
  • The Florida Information Resource Network (FIRN) was made available to users.

  • An IBM Series/1 with the Yale IUP was installed to support protocol conversion.
  • Facilities Management services were announced.
  • A 7350 Image Processor was acquired for a joint study.
  • SSRB East Wing renovations completed.

  • 3480 Tape Cartridges were installed.
  • SSRB West Wing renovations began.
  • NERFOCUS region established (LUIS).
  • 3820 Laser Printers installed for letter-quality output.
  • The Versatec replaced the Gould plotter.
  • Kermit communications software for PC's was installed.
  • NERDC connects to Bitnet.

  • An IBM 3090 (28 MIPs) replaces the 3033 and the 4341.
  • A CPU upgrade to a 3090-400 (December) replaces the 3081.
  • The Peabody staff moves back to the SSRB.
  • The Vector Facility was installed.
  • 7171 protocol converters replace Series/1s.
  • The Gould dies for good.
  • 4245 band printers replace 3202 chain printers.
  • TCP support was withdrawn in December.
  • Class R was instituted; Class N was removed.
  • Andy Olivenbaum was appointed Technical Coordinator.
  • Phyllis Hildebrand left NERDC.
  • CPU usage was free from March - June.

  • The Gould plotter and the card punch were removed.
  • Andy Olivenbaum receive's the SHARE President's Award at SHARE 68.
  • CIRCA discontinues data entry services.
  • Weekend hours were expanded and CICS became available 'til midnight M-F.
  • NERDC-managed offline disk storage was discontinued.
  • A third 7171 protocol converter was installed.
  • VM Batch Facility was installed.
  • VM/CMS and TPX were installed.

  • The last card reader was removed from the SSRB lobby.
  • NERDC connects to Internet.
  • TCP/IP-based network services were installed.
  • Class S was instituted (September).
  • GDDM-PCLKF was installed in VM.

  • Bulk Data Transfer service was implemented.
  • Class T, a new SYSOUT class, was defined.
  • Work began on the SSRB A/C upgrade.
  • LINDO/mainframe and TeX were installed in CMS.
  • DB2 was installed and tested in MVS.
  • Wordperfect 4.2 was installed for testing.
  • The SUBSCRIBE command was installed in CMS for /Update and the MEMO system.
  • The CHRGLIST utility was installed.
  • NSF was added to TCP/IP services.
